Soprano Kirsten Flagstad - In this episode of My Music w/ Dr. Mark Malkovich, Dr. Malkovich plays music sung by soprano Kirsten Flagstad. Flagstad was a Norwegian opera singer, one of the greatest Wagnerian (dramatic) sopranos of the 20th century. A restrained and expressive stage performer, she was admired internationally for her voice's sheer tonal beauty, power, stamina, security and consistency of line and tone.

Maria Tipo Plays Scarlatti's 18 Sonates - In this episode of My Music w/ Dr. Mark Malkovich, Dr. Malkovich plays Scarlatti's 18 Sonates by pianist Maria Tipo. The Italian pianist and pedagogue, Maria (Luisa) Tipo, gave her first public piano performance at the age of four. Her teacher was her mother, Ersilia Cavallo, herself a pupil of Ferruccio Busoni. She later received master-classes from Alfredo Casella and Guido Agosti. In 1948 she won 2nd prize (no 1st prize was given) at the Geneva International Competition, and returned in 1949 (age 17) to capture its 1st prize. In 1952 she won 3rd prize at the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition in Brussels.
Maria Tipo's success led rapidly to invitations to all the major musical centers in Europe as well as in the USA, Central and South America, Africa, U.R.S.S., Japan and the Middle East. She made her New York debut in 1955. After an absence of 32 years, she returned to New York in 1991 as a recitalist at the Metropolitan Musem of Art. She has performed whith the greatest orchestra in the world, among which the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the NBC Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Salzburb Mozarteum, La Scala in Milan, S.Cecilia in Rome, the RAI Milan-Turin-Rome, the Florence May, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, etc. Chamber music is also one of her interests, and she has performed with such artists as the Amadeus Quartet, Quartetto di Fiesole, Salvatore Accardo and Uto Ughi.

The 30-year-old British composer Tarik O’Regan blends Renaissance and other early music influences with fresh 21st-century ideas. The innovative chamber ensemble Aurea join the Singers for a concert that features O’Regan’s Ecstasies Above, — a setting of Edgar Allan Poe’s “Israfel,” for SATB chorus, two SATB vocal quartets and string quartet. Also on the program: music by William Byrd, Arvo Pärt, Olivier Messiaen and others.
